Vibe editor-in-chief Danyel Smith claims the magazine is not being sued and that Ciara is not
as miffed about her nude cover photo as reports make it seem. During an interview with a
New York radio station on Friday, Smith said, “I wasn’t at the photo shoot but everybody told
me it was loves and kisses and nakedness.” Smith says the nudity was Ciara’s idea. Asked if
Ciara actually said she wanted to pose nude for the magazine, Smith would only say, “I’m not
going to put words in her mouth but it was pitched to me in a way that it was time [for her] to
grow up and be beautiful and be free and to be all the things that she wanted to be.” Smith
also addressed the controversy over Robin Thicke’s comments that he didn’t get the cover
because he’s white. “We don’t make decisions based on race, we make decisions based on
how we make decisions. We are so flattered that Robin Thicke wants to be on the cover of
Vibe and we are just gonna hope that he gets to that level where he gets put on the cover of
Vibe.” — Jamila Daniel
